Ross is a Director in the family business Mactaggart & Mickel, a mid sized construction business whose core business is building homes. He has become a new member of the Group Board. For the first time he is responsible for holding a governance position within the business, and helping navigate the success of the business from both a family shareholder perspective and business objectives. This means entering into a highly professional relationship with his father and other family representatives on the board. Ross is using coaching to support this transition.

NHS Nursing Director

Rhoda is Nursing Director of NHS Orkney. The organization had been in flux for a number of years, with several different Chief Executives and indeed senior leaders, including a period where Rhoda was acting CEO. There had been so many changes to Rhoda’s role during this period of turbulence, and at the time of coaching, Rhoda had just settled back into her role of Nursing Director. The coaching contract was set up to support Rhoda in a scholarship for a Nursing Diploma. In this her desire was to reconnect with the foundations of good nursing care, whilst taking the latest thinking into her practice. She wanted all staff to reconnect with some of the fundamentals, getting back to high quality patient care as the focus.

Prize winning coaching Chair of Charity Board

My primary client was the Board of a mid sized organisation. As such the organisation itself was my overarching client. And, within this, I had to fully cater for each individual member of the Board as my client, as much as possible. This organisation had gone through an extremely difficult, disruptive period, and was reeling from the effects. There was immense distrust and resentment amongst Board members. The Chair and I were, and continue to be, deeply affected by one coaching session we had together within the overall coaching contract. For this Burditt submission, the Chair and myself decided to both write about and share our experience - independently, then together - and in doing so, we hope to sense-make more deeply together on our behalf and of the coaching community.

Fiona is Director of Operations, Women's & Children's Services and Clinical Neurosciences, NHS Edinburgh & Lothians. Her remit is complex, covering many areas, and she is operating under the pressure of continual change within the NHS, stiff targets and significant budget cuts Fiona had been driving change and performance for several years. Her focus had been on process, operations and targets, all required within the climate she is working within. But she had been feeling that her creativity had been slipping away. BT Wholesale engaged lifetimeswork in 2003 to coach senior leaders within the organization on their standard leadership behaviours. These has been recently introduced and they highlighted the dependencies on core values, plus the skills of strategic thinking and on leading others. Coaching clients came from an engineering background, had several hundred staff, and faced massive pressure to deliver, deliver, deliver. Team performance was crucial to this delivery.
